[Catalyst 9 - April 30, 2017] Dreams

By Ben Hart, VP of Marketing and Media

This week’s issue focuses on the topic of Dreams — their mystery, power and ability to offer deep healing and guidance.

As you’ll read, a precognitive dream opened a whole new world of magic and mystery for Shift staff writer and dreamwork guide Susan Audrey. The recognition that our nighttime dreams could offer a glimpse of what is to come radically altered her perspective on life. “I was discovering that our dreams can be the fast track to our higher Self and inner knowing,” writes Susan in her candid profile in this issue.

Author and speaker Dr. Larry Dossey experienced the same recognition, but unlike Susan, he turned away from the beckoning whisper of his precognitive dream. It occurred during his first year of practice as an internist and he was too heavily invested in the world of medicine to embrace a concept that was beyond the scope of science.

Dreams can not only open up a whole new world to us, they can reveal that the world itself is a dream. That’s a tenet of Hinduism, which views the material world as a dream of God’s, a projection of cosmic consciousness. Vishnu, a deity exalted as the highest God in the Bhagavad Gita, is portrayed as the Divine Dreamer of the world dream.

Since we are not separate from God, we dream the dream along with God. The dream and the dreamer are one and the same. What we call reality is but a dreamscape within Reality, the divine realm where peace, love, and beauty reign.

Susan Audrey writers in her profile piece that her dream experience bestowed a knowing “that we’re not alone and that help is always available to us.” It is this realization that enables us to become awake in the dream, awed by the unity, timelessness, and perfection of Reality.

One does not dream: one is dreamed. We "undergo" the dream, we are the objects.
— Carl Jung

In this issue of The Catalyst, we’re featuring compelling articles by Robert Moss, the creator of Active Dreaming, on the essential nature of shamans; Linda Backman on the challenge, opportunities and necessity of attending “Earth school”; Dr. Larry Dossey on the disturbing dream that threatened to upend his vision of reality; and Yoshi Aono explains why he founded Hanuman Festival, which this year takes place in Boulder, Colorado from June 15 to 18. Yoshi and the Hanuman team were with Philip Hellmich, our Director of Peace, in Rishikesh, India in March, filming interviews for the Yoga Day Summit.

In our Featured Media, we offer a post — highlighted by a 5-minute audio by dream teacher Robert Moss — on how dreams can help you find answers to life’s problems; a TEDx talk by Shift faculty Mark Gerzon in which he challenges us to harness both the “liberal” and “conservative” parts of our being in order to better love our country and more fully love ourselves; and a brief documentary about Chris Robinson, who partners with law enforcement authorities by sharing his precognitive dreams about disastrous events.

Our Member Profiles feature bestselling author and Shift faculty Mirabai Starr, who relates how Ram Dass personally introduced her to the Divine Mother when she was just a teenager; and Shift writer Susan Audrey, who shares how dreams played a crucial role in her awakening during a difficult time.

Our Featured Artist is Joe Muscatello, a California-based musician who combines uplifting pop vocals with modern electronic bass music.

We would love to hear your answer to the question, “Can you share a story about how a particular dream gave you valuable insight into an important issue?” To share your thoughts in our Facebook Page community, click here.

Our Shift Philanthropy section features The Schoolbox Project, which provides mobile, solar-powered schoolhouses offering trauma-informed education, art and play to children in refugee camps throughout Greece; and Dreamscape Foundation, a nonprofit founded by college student Joseph Sehwani to help improve the lives of people struggling with disease or disability.

May your dreams steer you toward a richer, more fulfilling, more abundant life. Just remember that dreams can’t fulfill their promise until you have the courage to act on them. May we all heed these words of wisdom penned by an anonymous sage:

Believe in your dreams and they may come true;
believe in yourself and they will come true.

Shamans as Dreamers, Dreamers as Shamans
By Robert Moss

The shamans who interest me are world-class dreamers who can travel between different worlds in the multiverse at will.

They know the roads of the afterlife because they have died and come back. They walk with Death at their left shoulder, as an ally, not a dread.

They know where to find lost souls and how to guide them to where they belong, in one world or another.

Soul Evolution: Clear Past Life Karma and Live Your Life Purpose
By Linda Backman

Just as a baby needs to eat, sleep and be held, you as a soul have an innate impetus to reach higher levels of spiritual learning. Advanced souls residing in the celestial realm are your “classroom teachers” as you begin the equivalent of pre-school-level training to prepare your soul for incarnation. Think about the critical job of a parent who initially cares for every need of the newborn and toddler.

By approximately age five, the child is ready to take that first step toward independence by beginning school. Coming into body and moving through life on Earth comprise your dense and challenging “laboratory of learning” in terms of soul evolution. After your newborn and toddler education in the celestial realm, you are sufficiently prepared as a soul to begin the Earth school of evolution from one lifetime to the next.

Dreaming: Doorway to a New Reality
By Larry Dossey, MD as told to Phil Bolsta

The most important aspect of my spiritual life is a sense of oneness with the Divine. It permeates my life and manifests as a sense of oneness and unity with other people.

A lot of people believe that unless they have some sort of incredible, life-changing sudden epiphany, their spiritual journey is not valid or genuine. We have to guard against that. The spiritual path is extraordinarily varied and it comes in many flavors. One of the things I would want to suggest to folks is that it’s the depth and the endurance that really matter, not the pyrotechnics, the fireworks that one may experience from time to time.

Hanuman Festival
By Yoshi Aono

A teacher once asked, why did you start Hanuman Festival? It’s a mountain of work to run a yoga festival — why would you put yourself through that? What a great question!

Well... Hanuman Festival was born out of the essence of devotion. It has been about serving Hanuman just as Hanuman was devoted to lord Rama. We head into year seven and I realize the "work" that has been put forth is merely in support of the festival's natural course of development.

How I Met My Mother
By Mirabai Starr

Click here to register for Mirabai’s free virtual event on Saturday, May 6: Receiving the Gifts of the Goddesses: How to Connect to the Powers of the Sacred Feminine & Awaken to Greater Love, Liberation and Beauty.

As this weird world grows weirder, I find myself turning more and more to the Divine Feminine for a clue about how to navigate the emerging landscape. Few of the familiar signposts feel reliable, and the spaces where I once took refuge — some semblance of sane leadership in my government, for instance, and a kind of baseline respect for the voice of the feminine in society — have vanished.

To my great relief, I find that a gorgeous array of goddesses reliably comes to the rescue whenever I call on them. When my outrage rises in response to pervasive injustice, I call on Kali, the Divine Mother in the Hindu tradition, to wield her sword of unconditional love, dispelling illusion and setting Truth free. When my heart breaks for the pain of the world, I connect with the mercy of Kwan Yin, the courage of Mother Mary, and Tara’s Bodhisattva Vow to help me bear the unbearable.

Divorce, Dreams & the Divine
By Susan Audrey

One of the best things about being a writer and editor for The Shift Network is getting asked: Tell us the story of your awakening.

Well, here goes…

When I was 33 years old, I became a divorced, single mother of two, ages three and six. It was a tough road. There’s nothing like single parenting to sober you up to how hard your reality can become — and how fast.
